Supporting and leading global
groundwater science and sustainability initiatives.

We support and lead global groundwater science and sustainability initiatives to improve our understanding of groundwater and encourage governance change in different places since groundwater does not have a global governing body.

Water Underground blog

Tom founded and currently leads this groundwater nerd-blog, written by a global collective of hydrogeologic researchers for water resource professionals, academics, and anyone interested in groundwater research, teaching, and supervision. It was the first blog hosted by both EGU and EGU blogospheres.

Water Underground talks

A series of videos of diverse groundwater experts from around the world to share their passions and their latest research with a critical yet positive and forward-looking perspective. We are partnering with various organizations, including IGRAC, UNESCO, IAH, GRIPP, and GIWS to help raise the profile of this initiative and distribute these Water Underground Talks, youtube and social media.

Global groundwater sustainability statement

Tom initiated and led the international effort to write, release, and promote the global groundwater sustainability statement, which was published in Nature in 2019. The statement has over 1,300 signatories from over 100 countries, was on the official agenda of a UN-Water Meeting, and is building momentum towards the 2022 UN World Water Day.

Invited talks, leading workshops and conferences

Tom helps organize workshops and conferences such as the AGU Chapman in Valencia, Spain in 2019. He also gives 5-10 invited talks per year at conferences such as AGU, EGU, and GSA, and other venues such as the National Academy of Sciences, Harvard, MIT, and Columbia - check out the youtube channel for some of these.
